Understanding ADHD

ADHD Assessment and Training with

Many children and adults deal with attention-based problems such as:

  • lack of focus

  • learning issues

  • academic issues

  • behavioral issues

  • social anxieties

  • difficulty making friends

  • confusion

  • emotional outbursts

  • damaged self-esteem

  • strained family relationships.

The problem may be Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). However, attention problems may also stem from:

  • anxiety

  • depression

  • anger

  • school issues

  • behavioral issues

  • family issues

  • poor sleep.

The medicines prescribed for ADHD can make these conditions worse. These medicines are powerful, have abuse potential, have side effects, and must be used with caution.

ADHD is too often diagnosed only with questionnaires. An accurate diagnosis is critical for a proper and responsible treatment plan. Many doctors no longer prescribe, and many insurance companies will not authorize, ADHD medications unless the patient has undergone a competent and thorough assessment from a mental health professional experienced in the diagnosis and treatment of ADHD.

Better Minds Group psychologists and clinical counselors know how to differentiate ADHD from other complex diagnosable problems:

  • Aspergers spectrum disorders

  • panic disorders

  • obsessive-compulsive disorders

  • bi-polar disorder

  • sensory processing disorders

  • specific phobias

We use a broad and in-depth evaluation process. We identify the source of attention problems within the context of a person's life and cognitive style: resilience, outlook, self-awareness, and sensitivity to context.  We include a 20-site electroencephalogram (E.E.G.) assessment that reveals how well one's brain is carrying out it's duties. We are careful not to over-diagnose.  Better Minds Group provides the best, most sophisticated, ADHD assessment in our area.

If ADHD is the problem, and you choose to use medication, we can work with your physician or psychiatrist to monitor medication effectiveness and side effects.

We offer alternatives and compliments to medication: NeurOptimal E.E.G.-biofeedback, clinical hypnosis, and EMDR. We teach effective behavioral strategies. When we work with our clients using these methods, they often find that as personal, school and work performance improves they can reduce or even end their need for medication.

If the problem is any of the other problems listed above, we help with those too.
